Parenting an overweight or obese child – a process of ambivalence

(2005-2007)

Summary
This intervention project was a sub-study under the project «Parents can!» conducted at the Center for Health Promotion, Akershus University Hospital. The aim was to contribute to weight reduction in overweight children (4-10 years of age) through measures for their parents. In addition to the development and the implementation of a group counseling program for these parents, the children were also examined clinically. The results are presented in a master’s thesis (Brit Beckensteen, project manager). Before the intervention, the parents were split into three groups and took part in focus-group interviews regarding their experiences parenting an overweight child. The results reflected parents’ ambivalence between accepting their child, showing their child love and respect and setting limits regarding their eating habits. The research paper below was also part of a PhD study.
